Understanding Your Check Engine Light

Few things spike your stress like a check-engine light. The good news: it's usually a heads-up, not an emergency. Here's how to read it.
Solid vs. flashing
A steady light means something needs attention soon, but it's typically safe to drive carefully to the shop.
A flashing light means a more serious issue (often a misfire) that can damage your catalytic converter — ease off and get it looked at right away.
Common causes
- A loose or failed gas cap (yes, really)
- A failing oxygen (O2) sensor
- A bad mass airflow sensor
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils
- Catalytic converter problems
What to do
